Job description

The opportunity

As a Year Leader for BA (Hons) Product and Furniture Design, you will take responsibility for the academic leadership and management of the year/level working alongside the Course Leader. You will work within a creative team, contributing to the ongoing development of this newly re-approved course and lead the co-design and co-delivery of the curriculum. The role requires you to manage and organise the day-to-day activities and communications of the year group including all areas of learning, teaching and assessment of students as well as resource allocation whilst observing and implementing the policies and procedures of the University and the College.

The role is a chance to make an impact on a course with a unique approach that considers the designed object’s influence on social interaction and purpose within an ethical and responsible design context. The course is part of the Design and Material Practices Programme within the Design School and based at Chelsea College of Arts.

About you

With an undergraduate and postgraduate qualification relevant to the subject of Product and Furniture Design, you will be an active product and/or furniture designer and maker, supporting students in studio practice and the underpinning of critical context. You will maintain strong links with design practitioners from a wide range of professions, subjects and disciplines and build collaborative links with a range of institutions and employers.  You will have confidence in managing large groups and communicating in a range of practice and theory learning environments, including large and small studio spaces, lecture theatre and seminar spaces and working knowledge of using online platforms where applicable. You will have experience of course administration, pedagogic innovation, assessment processes and procedures.  You will bring excellent organisational and communication skills to the Year Leader role.

The course has a broad approach to Product and Furniture design education, and you will be expected to have experience of working in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary practices and knowledge of subject-related design software. We are interested in candidates with subject expertise and a specialism in one or more of the following: inclusive and social design, circular design, digital practices / emerging technologies, design for health and wellbeing or public engagement. This course has a track record of delivering dynamic Knowledge Exchange and live projects with diverse partners. In this role, you will lead and contribute to new developments in this area.
