Job description

The opportunity

University of the Arts London (UAL) is looking for an experienced policy and public affairs professional to join our expanding Policy and Advocacy team as a Creative Industries Policy Manager.

Based in the Social Purpose Lab, the Policy and Advocacy team seeks to position UAL as a thought leader and leading institution on Creative Industries policy. In this newly created role, you’ll utilise your political awareness and policy/influencing skills to help shape the direction of UAL’s policy and public affairs strategy and to influence agendas within the Creative Industries.

Working closely with key members of the Policy and Advocacy team, you’ll develop the team's Creative Industries policy brief, managing key aspects of our policy priorities, including:

  • Creative Industries and growth (including leading any work with the Government on the forthcoming industrial strategy and what this means for the creative industries)
  • AI and the Creative Industries
  • Skill gaps in the Creative Industries
  • Green and future skills agendas
  • The UK as a creative superpower

You’ll also establish and develop the team's relationships with key external stakeholders (including MPs, Peers, Civil Servants and Special Advisers) and will assist senior staff and the wider academic community with their own engagement with policymakers.

About you

You’ll need experience of working on public policy campaigns and of policy brief management.

In addition to this, you’ll possess experience of supporting senior members of staff. This will include experience of formulating responses to government consultations, writing policy reports and briefings, horizon scanning and monitoring, and conducting successful meetings.

With sound political judgement, you’ll demonstrate an excellent understanding of the UK political system and public policy environment in related fields, along with knowledge of the Creative Industries and policy and a wider understanding of higher education and the creative economy.

The ability to work with broad national and local networks in related policy fields is essential, along with the ability to communicate complex policy messages clearly and succinctly.
