The opportunity

The University of the Arts London’s (UAL), emergent Fashion, Textiles & Technology Institute (FTTI), builds on the delivery of a £5.9m AHRC Creative Research & Development Partnership (CRDP) funding award (2018-24), the Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology (BFTT), as part of the successful UKRI Creative Industry Cluster Programme (CICP).

FTTI is hosted at the new UAL estate for London College of Fashion at East Bank – a new powerhouse for creativity and learning in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, providing unprecedented opportunity for UAL to develop state-of-the-art provision for research and innovation.

We are now seeking to appoint an experienced, highly motivated part-time, post-doctoral research fellow to work on the multidisciplinary research project Back to Baselines in Circular Fashion & Textiles. Back to Baselines is led by the University of Leeds, and brings together industry, industry bodies (UKFT, WRAP) and multidisciplinary researchers with expertise across environmental science, textiles engineering, fashion design and sustainable business practice from HEIs across the UK (Nottingham Trent University, University of Huddersfield, Newcastle University, Heriot-Watt University, the University of Huddersfield and Manchester Metropolitan University). The project aims to establish comprehensive, scientifically validated, and well-evidenced environmental and design baselines, standards and principles for the Fashion & Textiles industry. 

The research fellow will support the Principle Co-Investigator to map Fashion, Textiles and Technology Innovation, investment and evaluation tools that have been designed to inform sustainable decision making across the UK and beyond. The research fellow will also connect into and build relationships across the connected and complementary networks funded by UKRI and NERC, including Network Plus and the Future Fibre Network to better align the notion of innovation in sustainability. 

About you

The ideal candidate will have a sound knowledge and experience working with qualitative, quantitative and participatory research methods, including the delivery of workshops. They will need excellent organisational skills to coordinate and contribute to the delivery of research activities, data analysis and reporting; as well as project management skills to help plan and deliver, and awareness of and interest in the challenges and opportunities of working collaboratively using participatory research methodologies with a diverse range of community co-investigators. Skills and interests in sustainability in the fashion, textiles and technology Industry is essential. The research fellow will need to support the development and production of co-designed resources or interventions, such as videos, tools, guidance or training materials.
